Be your own fitness coach

It is great if you have the luxury of a physical therapist and a personal trainer, when you are trying to get or stay in top physical shape. They can train you to exercise in a safe and effective way that can transform your body and mind and make you a generally healthier and happier person.  But that is not for everyone. Maybe a personal trainer is not in your budget or maybe you just don’t want someone telling you how to workout. You can do it yourself.

Arm yourself with information. Learn all you can about nutrition, anatomy and muscle function. Everything you learn will be empowering. You can learn what foods you should eat, to gain muscle mass without packing on unwanted pounds of fat. You will learn how to work your muscles in a way that will make them strong and balanced with each other. You will learn how to protect yourself from injuries and rehabilitate old problems.

There are plenty of sources for information online. You could look at medical sites, sites about nutrition or bodybuilding websites. You will also find a plethora channels on Youtube dedicated to helping you get in shape.

Set realistic goals for yourself. One of the biggest reasons people stop working out is because they try to do much too quick. They work out muscle groups every single day and don’t give them a chance to ever heal muscular damage. Or they try to lift more weights than possible for them at the moment. Take it easy on yourself. If you are just starting out, you might find it useful to do exercises multiple times per day, but at only 40% of your capacity. For example, if you could do 20 pushups at a time, do 8, but do 8 five times in a day. Increase the weights and repetitions only gradually.

Reward yourself when you reach your goals. Some things you might bribe yourself with could be a vacation get away. Even a weekend in Vegas or a day-trip to the mountains could be a big incentive to keep doing the work. You could also bring yourself with new electronics. For example, when you lose that last 20 pounds, get yourself a new smartphone that you have been wanting. Or you could treat yourself to new clothing, like a new outfit from a nice place like New York & Company, or a whole new wardrobe in your new size.

Write down your workouts. It will help you see progress over time and will let you know your strengths and weaknesses.  If you write down your diet as well, it will help you count calories or find items in your diet that don’t agree with you. It may help you lose some weight as well.

Become the coach of others if you really love it.  You will help others and keep yourself motivated to be the best version of you that you can be.
